Geological maps of the Girona area available for public consultation

Last Wednesday, May 22, in the hall of the Faculty of Sciences of the UdG was presented the digital repository of geological cartography of the Area of External Geodynamics of the Department of Environmental Sciences. The event also served to recognize the professional trajectory and the scientific contribution of Dr. Lluís Pallí i Buxó. He was chaired by the Rector of the UdG, accompanied by the Dean of the Faculty, the director of the department and the director of the GEOCAMB center. It had the presence of some 40 people, among them members of the same university community, representatives of the Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia and representatives of city councils.

Dr. Lluís Pallí was professor and researcher at the UAB and Girona university centers between 1970 and 2012. Apart from teaching and responsibilities in management positions, between 1978 and 2007, he developed an intense task of geological characterization of the counties of Girona. Under his leadership, and with the participation of researchers from the Area of Geodynamics and some external collaborators, the geological knowledge of the territory materialized in the publication of more than 50 maps in paper format.

The GEOCAM center of the UdG, as depository of this fund, has digitized this cartographic production on several scales and made it available to everyone through its website: http://geocamb.udg.edu/mapes /. This resource has been structured in 4 collections: Geological mapping at municipal scale, Geomorphological cartography, Thematic cartography and Vulcanism in the Girona region. All maps can be consulted online and downloaded free of charge and free of charge.

David Brusi, current director of GEOCAMB, emphasized that geological maps are the most basic, complete and explicit representation of the physical environment. They allow to objectify the litology, the age and the geometry of the geologic formations or the forms of the landscape. They constitute support for multiple research activities and, among other aspects, provide information on natural resources, geological risks or the reconstruction of the episodes of geological history. This acquired knowledge is one of the pillars on which the research and transfer activity of the GEOCAMB center of the UdG is still based on fields as diverse as applied geology, hydrogeology or the valuation of geological heritage.

Carles Roqué, researcher at GEOCAMB, reviewed the various stages of cartographic production led by Dr. Pallí over more than 30 years. He explained, in an exhibition full of anecdotes, the work of field work, the obtaining and identification of samples and the process of delineation, editing and printing of geological cartography collections.

The publication of geological maps was made possible by the support of the Diputació de Girona and more than fifteen city councils in the Girona region. A number of graphic arts companies such as Gràfiques Bigas, Dalmau Carles-Pla, Alzamora, Curbet and Palahí also played a leading role.

The act of presentation of the repository became a dear and sincere tribute to the University of Girona in the professional career of Dr. Lluís Pallí for his contribution to the geological knowledge of the counties of Girona. All parliaments agreed on the relevance and validity of their contribution to the geological cartography of the territory, which is now available to anyone interested, through the GEOCAMB website.
